Sports Injuries

Exercise is important to good health, but we often get hurt when participating in sports or other physical activities. A sports injury involves hurt to part of your body due to sports, exercise, or athletic activities.

Why do sports injuries occur?
  • Not training or playing properly

  • Training too much (Excess Workload)

  • Not wearing the right footwear

  • Not wearing the right safety equipment

  • Rapid growth during puberty

  • Poor Nutrition and hydration

There are two kinds of sports injuries:

Acute traumatic injuries like:

  • Fractures

  • Sprains

  • Strains/Muscle Pulls

  • Concussions

  • Cuts/Lacerations/Open Wounds

Overuse Injuries: These injuries are also called chronic injuries because they happen over time, usually from repetitive training, like running, overhand throwing, or serving a ball in tennis. Overuse injuries might not seem serious at first. But if they're not treated, they usually get worse.

  • Stress Fractures

  • Tendonitis

Getting Back in the Game

"When can I play again?", is often the first thought that comes in after an injury. This depends on the type of injury. Often, following a sports injury, you will have to go through the process of RRR -Rest (relative rest more often than complete rest!), Rehab and Return to Sporting Activities.

One of the most important aspects of rehabilitating a sports injury is treating it as soon as possible. Your treatment plan and duration of recovery will vary depending on how severe the injury is, your health history, and whether or not the injury requires surgical intervention.

Rehab

Rehabilitation ("rehab" for short) is one of the most important aspects of your treatment following a sports injury. It might include physiotherapy, manual therapy, ultrasound, dry needling, and myofascial release (MFR) to help relieve pain and promote healing.
